Re: What keeps pigs pink
Tue, March 14, 2006 - 12:46 PMSaw that, the cranky carnivores always come out swinging when this topic come up on alternet. They usually rationally discuss everything but don't get between them and their meat!

Tue, March 14, 2006 - 5:00 PMWhat, you never read The Jungle? (Not that I'm one to talk. I've been halfway through it for months now. But that's not the point!) -

Re: What keeps pigs pink
Tue, March 14, 2006 - 9:22 PMI've known about this for years, and it is totally weird.
Honestly i find it far more disturbing that many of the so called "natural" or "organic" foods at our co-op are getting more and more mainstream additives. It's like it has become faddish and people want to cash in on it. For example, I grew up with the old-school hippie idea that sugar is the milk of the devil, especially when it is added to random foods like peanut butter. I'm so used to buying "all natural" or "organic" peanut butter, and having it just be peanuts and salt. But I wasn't paying attention last time I went shopping. I later discovered that I had just bought the organic equivalent of skippy. It had sugar and extra peanut oil added (among other things). Ergh! -

Re: What keeps pigs pink
Wed, March 15, 2006 - 9:31 AMyeah, there are definitely "healthy, organic" junk foods. I never learned about reading labels until I became a vegetarian 18 yrs ago, and I learned a lot. Not that I don't eat junk sometimes, but it is always good to know what you are consuming. -

Re: What keeps pigs pink
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 8:49 PMokay, I lied...
What i find totally way more disturbing for the veggies out there is that our local county jail flatout refuses to provide inmates with veggie/vegan food. They will only accomodate dietary issues if the institution's doctor deems it medically necessary.
I think this is totally ass. For so many reasons.
