CSAs

Hi Cuties! I'm wondering if anyone here has had experiences with CSAs near them? Are you a member? Do you find yourself using all the produce in a timely manner? Have you ever thought about joining one?

I'd love to hear thoughts on the subject.

In the Bay Area in California, you can get "the box", local organic produce delivered either every or every other week. You can specify what you do/don't want, and it's pretty rad.

At my office, we get the box every other week, with fruit only, and no lemons, and we roll through it in about the right amount of time; you learn what goes bad quickly (grapes & berries), and what will last up until you get more (apples, pears, oranges, kiwis).

Friends of mine love theirs, they say it's expanded their cooking knowledge as they start using veggies they wouldn't have otherwise used, and it's awesome to support independent local farmers!

I'm actually a bit annoyed by those pick-what-you-want box services. They parade around like CSAs, but often times the produce you're getting is coming from across the country if not across the globe. Organic, sure, but if it's not in season locally, it still travelled a long way to get to you. Not that there's anything wrong with that if you're in it more for the convenience and the organic than the local... I just wish they didn't look so similar.

As for CSAs, I have joined 2 and enjoyed them. The first was EatWell and the second was Riverdog. Both are in/near the Bay Area. I found them through www.localharvest.org/ I generally used stuff up before the next box came, and if I didn't, I'd make soup! My life is often too hectic to allow me to do much cooking at home, and then comes time to cancel the subscription or stuff sits around way too long. It's pretty amazing though, if you've never done a lot of farmers market shopping, to see just how much longer truly fresh produce lasts versus what you buy at the grocery store. Through these two CSAs, ate literally the best kiwis and strawberries I'd ever tasted, and learned that beets are not evil.

This may have changed, but the last time I researched the box, it was not local produce. You can get mangos, bananas, etc. And they purchase things at the cheapest price, not based on any other concerns.

I have experience with two boxes. I used to deliver boxes for Berkeley Youth Alternatives which was a combination of produce grown in Berkeley in part by kids and Terra Firma farms, which supplemented the box. I never subscribed to this, because my roommate at the time actually worked for "The Box", so we got a really big discount.

More recently I subscribed to Full Belly Farms, which I loved. I definitely had to supplement what I got from them on most weeks (although this last year was a hard year for farmers, I think), mostly with greens and fruit. I live alone with my husband and we rarely had trouble finishing our box, but it definitely encouraged us to eat home more and eat more veggies! We did not have a car and for an extra $5, they delivered it to our front porch, which worked nicely for us.

I have really wanted to do this, but I'm uncertain how it would work as I live in an apartment building and I just don't know where they would drop off the box when they deliver. I certainly wouldn't want it sitting outside of my apartment building....it can guarantee it wouldn't be there when I returned home at the end of the day.

Most of the CSAs don't deliver to your doorstep. They deliver to a central point in several neighborhoods, and you go pick your box up during specified hours. I never had a problem with my box not being there.

There are a number of farms and farm basket programs in davis, and when I lived in Jackson there were CSA baskets and so on. I think they are great. You get the fresh veggies that are in season and you have to learn how to cook with them. Often times you end up with veggies that you usually wouldn't think to buy (or that are crazy expensive) and you get to try new things. (like pineapple guavas...)
