    Well, I know that Just Vegan in San Diego has them... but that's probably a little further than you want to go. Gourmet marshmallows are also getting to be a trendy item, and many of them don't have gelatin or anything non vegan because they use marshmallow root instead. You might call wholefoods to find out

    also, kosher marshmallows MIGHT be vegan... k gelatin is sometimes made from agar-agar. but check the labels to see if there are eggs in there! If not, i know LA has a huge jewish community, so you might be able to find them in a more traditional jewish grocery or deli.

    OH... well, this is what google has to say:

    your milage may vary. Our local co-op has vegan mushmallos (as I called them as a kid) made by Vegan Sweets, which I believe is the Pangea brand.

    And, if you're in the mood to expiriment, here's a recipe to make vegan marshmallows at home :)

    Now i'm tired from Critcal Mass... have a happy weekend, friends

      The kosher vegan marshmallows we had at camp used fish gelatin. Definitely read labels even on kosher parve stuff!

        Yeah, I would agree, Kosher just means it meets rabbitical standards and it doesn't preclude meat eccept shellfish, unhooved animals, and animals that don't chew their cud.

          Parve means no meat or dairy, but... by Jewish standards, fish isn't meat.

            I've never known of anything pareve to include fish. People are careful to not mix fish with the meat, so having fish in something pareve would constitute a kashrut problem, b/c people might inadvertently mix the fish-containing thing with meat. (Like melted marshmallows on beef?)

              The basic categories in kashrut are:

              Meat=fleishig
              Milk=michig
              Neutral= pareve
              Not kosher=treif

              Fish is considered pareve. You might be right about most packaged foods labeled as pareve not containing fish, but if you go look at a jar of gefilte fish, you'll see that it's labeled pareve. Eggs are also considered pareve.

              It's okay to mix pareve things with meat or with milk; it's just meat and milk that can't be mixed with each other.

                Gayle, believe me, I know whereof I speak on the mixing fish with meat thing. This issue is the reason that in kosher homes at meal where fish is being served it is served separately, on a different plate and with different silver than the rest of the meal.

                  Wow. I've never experienced that. I'm not orthodox myself, though, and I haven't often eat at the homes of strictly-kosher-keeping people; perhaps the kashrut I'm familiar with is more relaxed.

    I ordered 6 bags of vegan marshmallows from Pangea.

    For the first time I was really disappointed with their lack of quality. They're yellowed and look gross. They melted OK, but they are NOT the same quality they used to be. Or perhaps I just got a bad batch.

    if you find some good ones let me know!!

    :)

    Passover's coming up, so kosher food stores will have marshmallows abounding -- lots I would guess that don't contain fish or any other dead animal type stuff.

    there has been a big scandal with vegan marshmallows, which is why those icky yellow ones have replaced most of the others that vegan online stores were selling. the 'kosher' geletain was indeed made with animal product of some sort, which was discovered by testing, not by admission from whatever company was selling it (Emes?). not sure what they were, could be fish. once the word spread through the vegan marshmallow community all the vegan stores stopped selling them.

    but all that is irrelevant now, there is a new vegan marshmallow on the block and you can find out about it here:

      not for toasting or dipping in cocoa, but Fluff--yes, Fluff--is vegetarian. Not vegan. But vegetarian. Proudly made in Lynn, MA, city of, uh...you probably know the rhyme.

      From this delightful product one can make Rice Krispy squares. Of course, Rice Krispies probably contains refined sugar. Anyhow.

      Sweet and Sara makes vegan marshmallows.

      I have no idea why no one makes marshmallows out of MARSH MALLOW anymore....

        Fluff! I've fantasized about fluff recently, but haven't seen the stuff around in years. I'm wondering if I'm just missing it in the local supermarkets. I wanted peanut better and fluff sandwiches for my desert camping trip this year but never found zee fluff.
