Hey,
Looking for a vegan friendly dim sum joint in the bay area... The problem with many places that have vegeterian options is that they still have live or dead animals on display in the place :( But I love dim sum!!!
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Eylon

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Wed, May 3, 2006 - 4:03 PMoh man, I haven't had dim sum in ages because of this very reason, you may also want to ask in the SF Veg Restaurants tribe!

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Wed, May 3, 2006 - 5:06 PMi have no idea where to find this in the bay area. I wish...
however, if you are in NYC, go to the amazing place in chinatown with the creative name of "vegetarian dim sum house". Totally vegan, inexpensive and exceptional food -

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Thu, May 4, 2006 - 7:20 AMI don't know the bay area at all. But the thing to watch out for when going to asian restaurants in general is seafood. Many will make "veggie" dishes with shrimp and even fish in it...and some even pork and chicken...be careful!
As well even if not. Be careful for nam pla (fish sauce) oyster sauce and shrimp powder. Many asian restaurants don't actually see those things as animal products but more as condiments like soy sauce and pepper. So if you ask them they will tell you it is vegetarian but its swimming in oyster sauce.
Also you need to watch out for eggs.
oh and many korean and japanese made nori sheets (the ones used in japanese and korean restaurants) are soaked in fish sauce to give them an extra fishy taste. it's part of the drying process and not listed in the ingredients. so if you buy algae from an asian market, be warned as well. -

Fri, May 5, 2006 - 11:52 PMYep. Always ask about fish sauce in thai restaurants! The tip about the nori was new to me.
Anyway, thanks for all the replies. I'll try that place that came up in google and report :)

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Sat, May 13, 2006 - 10:47 AMBeen to the Big Lantern @ 16th street the other day. Overall it was nice but almost all the Vegan options turned out to have the exact same fillings (shitake, sprouts, cabbage I think) only in different doughs. So a bit dissapointing but ok.
I'll try some other places :)

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 8:38 AMI've never been there, but there is this place in Berkeley (somewhere--I suspect it would show up if you googled it) called "The Vegetable Company." It is allegedly the 'Best Vegetarian Restaurant" in the Bay Area as well as being the "Best Chinese Restaurant" in the Bay Area, which, judging by the copious quantities fo them, is saying something. I've heard that they serve Dim Sum...I really need to actually go try this place because I've not had Dim Sum since I went veggie...oh my god, that is the one thing I truly miss... -

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Tue, December 25, 2007 - 10:11 PMI've had some lovely vegan chinese/asian food from restaurants run by people who were vegetarian buddhists. I'm a little culturally incompetent on that front, but the food was absolutely amazing. -

Re: Good Vegan Dim-Sum?
Tue, January 1, 2008 - 12:48 PMI'd love a list of them- Asian Vegetarian restaurants- in California. My favorite as of now is all the way over in Australia.
Would be nice to find them locally. but this is a bit off topic...
